Youth Initiative for Human Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina starts the program “Antifa 2.0”

Dear all,

The events surrounding the Mass for the victims of Bleiburg, planned for tomorrow, May 16th, in the Sarajevo Cathedral, once again showed the ubiquity of historical revisionism.

The Mass itself as a religious rite is not the topic of our statement, because it is about the free use of religious rights guaranteed by the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina and international acts to which BiH is a signatory.

The crux of the problem is broader than the Mass itself as a religious rite, and that is the fact that the Mass is only a small part of the larger picture that represents the broad process and effort to justify the genocidal policies of the Independent State of Croatia which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent victims.

The tactic of historical revisionism is to equate criminals and victims of a deliberately genocidal policies aimed at the extermination of a certain ethnic, religious, national, racial or other group by finding incredible justifications for the victims’ suffering or doubting the credibility of the evidence, while on the other hand, the criminal tries to put himself in the position of a righteous freedom fighter for his people.

Unfortunately, we can find such examples of historical revisionism in our area almost on daily basis, so we can find cases of denial or diminution of the Holocaust, victims of Jasenovac, Sajmište, rehabilitation and revitalization of the character and work of Draža Mihailović through regular gatherings of members of “Četnički Ravnogorski pokret” movement, rehabilitation and naming of schools for controversial figures such as Mustafa Busuladžić as well as denial of the Srebrenica genocide and victims of convicted crimes in Višegrad, Foča, Prijedor, Zvornik and elsewhere.

Historical revisionism is not unique to our area or region. On the contrary, it is present worldwide.

However, the fact is that in most parts of Europe, in order to defend the truth and established facts and reduce the possibility of manipulating the truth, there is a strong legal basis in the form of laws banning fascism and fascist features.

The necessity of the existence of such a law in the legal system of Bosnia and Herzegovina is obvious. With the adoption of that law, complete with the law on the prohibition of genocide denial, we will be able to have adequate response of the judicial authorities to the long-standing campaign of a revisionist approach to the events of 1941-1945 and 1992-1995.

Of course, the law itself must be accompanied by activities in the field of education and public information in order to present to the general public, especially young people, established facts that, once adopted, will be an obstacle to false news and, most importantly, a basis for sincere intensification of fact-based reconciliation processes in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

For these reasons, the Youth Initiative for Human Rights in BiH launches the program “Antifa 2.0” through which we will respond with modern methods to current manifestations of fascism and historical revisionism through public appearances and educational and cultural activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In addition to this week’s publication of educational texts of our activists on YIHR BiH’s social network profiles, on Saturday May 16th, in response to another phenomenon of historical revisionism, our activists will distribute leaflets in the center of Sarajevo with symbolic messages of the urgent need for legal regulation and prevention of historical revisionism. At the same time, it will be a call for responsible action by politicians, regardless of their nationality or party affiliation, because anti-fascism is a fundamental human value that we all share as European citizens.
